- So you used Lightwave for a few hours and now you're an expert. Yeah
- right. Use the program for a month to do real work. Learn its ins
- and outs. Then I might take your pronouncements more seriously.

- I'm having a little difficulty fathoming exactly what you mean by
- "render circles around". Do you mean that 3DS will render faster
- than Lightwave in typical scenes? If so, then maybe you could
- provide us with some meaningful benchmarks. You may be right. But
- bear in mind the fastest renderer may not be the best renderer.
-
- Perhaps you were referring to 3DS rendering circles around Lightwave
- in terms of rendering features? Let's see, Lightwave's renderer can
- do selective raytracing of reflection and refraction. 3DS? Sorry,
- not without a costly IPAS routine, and then only for still images.
- Lightwave's renderer has high quality glows and lens flares built in.
- 3DS? Sorry. IPAS time again. Lightwave's renderer can accurately
- render COLORED shadows for tinted transparent objects. 3DS? Sorry.
- Maybe that raytracing IPAS will do it...
-
- Or maybe you meant that 3DS renderings LOOK better than Lightwave's?
- First, the look of a rendering is determined largely by the artistry
- of the animator and his skill in using his software tools. I know
- nothing of your artistry, but I think I can safely say that you are
- not a skilled Lightwave animator. It takes more than a weekend to
- become that. Second, the substantial majority of people I have
- spoken to who have extensively used both programs think that, for
- their own work, Lightwave produces better looking output. YMMV.

- Care to offer specifics? Does it "suck" that most commonly performed
- modeling/animation tasks can be performed in fewer mouseclicks/
- keystrokes in Lightwave than in 3DS? Does it "suck" that Lightwave's
- modeler gives you ten modeling layers that you can operate on in any
- combination. Does it "suck" that the modeler has an UNDO feature
- (MULTIPLE UNDO in LW 4.0), or that it allows you to model with spline
- patches, or that it has a very powerful metaform function for easily
- creating otherwise difficult to model shapes? Does it suck that
- Lightwave allows numeric input control for all functions and tools,
- or that Lightwave offers graphical spline envelopes for animatable
- parameters, whereas 3DS only offers ease-in/ease-out views for one
- key at a time? Does the inclusion of bones and displacement mapping
- in Lightwave likewise suck?
-
- You are familiar/comfortable with 3DS's interface, and unfamiliar
- with Lightwave's. That should not be confused with Lightwave's
- interface "sucking". The consensus of those familiar with both
- programs seems to be that Lightwave's interface is more efficient,
- productive, and just plain fun than 3DS's, though 3DS may still be
- better suited for certain jobs.
-
- I would never assert that "Lightwave is Better than 3DS." Different
- people have different needs and styles of thinking/working.
- Lightwave may be "better" for some animators, while 3DS may be
- "better" for others. Myself? I plan on buying 3DS in the near
- future for its own unique strengths and features. It should
- complement Lightwave nicely. You may want to take a similar approach
- with Lightwave. Think of it as a three or four moderately priced
- IPAS routines. :-) TTYL.
